Animatic Story Board

This is the animatic version of our storyboard. Throughout we have tried to cut the video to the beat as we will try to on the final version proper. This storyboard has allowed us to see how our video may look once complete and give us a chance to try different camera angles and stage positions.

Narative Theorists

Laura Mulvey - Male Gaze
we have not created a character/performer which will satisfy the male gaze as our star and backing singers are all men. You could say that we have made a male gaze for the woman, where the main character/performer is attractive to the women and we have done this purposely.

Todorov Theory
"Every narrative starts with an equilibrium (state of normality) Then there's a disruption (a disturbance to the normality) New equilibrium as a result of the disruption."
- In our video, we have begun with a man who is ‘normal’ but then be gets taken into a mental hospital for what he thinks is no reason, but then we realise that he is actually really crazy.

Barthes Theory
"We understand narratives through understanding and decoding signals and codes."
- We will use an actions code to hint to the viewer about what is about to happen. For example we are going to use objects and such to show foreshadowing of later events. We are going to send signals to suggest what is going to happen but not give to much away by hinting a few things. This theory is quite hard with a disjuncture music video.

Creating Our White Location

This video displays a way in which a white background can be created, similarly to what we need to have. The budget and euipment shown in the video may be a little higher and professional to what we have access to however from seing this we now have an insight of how we could create one on our resoruces and budget. For example before we were considering a white sheet background or a white paint on ply wood, but now I would be more inclined to use paper rolls as this is easier to light and has a sharper line to it with no creases. In terms of lighting between the two of us we believe that we have access to enough light sources but we may wish to additionaly hire or borrow a higher watted and better quality lighting system to create a clean and bold 'zone 1'. As we have not yet created this white location,it has not been possible to take location shots as yet.

Schedule List

Once we have a final storyboard complted and created an animatic that gives us a clear indication of how the video will look, these are the next things we'll need to complete. 1. find an outlet to hire lighting, camera and tripod from, book when to hire. 2. gather materials to create the white asylum location. 3. hire/buy costume for all three featured males. 4. kit out artists in the video to ensure that the look on the day is slick. 5. film shots of the video sequence 6. post production editing. (this is a vague idea of sequence events but I have drawn it out to give us an idea of what tasks we have to complete in the near future)

Avery Storm's Version Of Animal

This is an Independent artist called Avery Storm who has, like us produced a new video fo the Miike Snow song. However unlik us he has also changes the lyrical timings and musical tempo using his own voice instead as a cover. Avery Storm took Miike Snow's lyrics from "Animal" but that is the only parallel with the original. The measurement in Storm's vocal cadence drags with confusion when he sings "I change shapes just to hide in this place." The record attaches to frustrating and discomfiting feelings when life seems like it is no longer in your control. A state of marvel one should attempt to avoid, which is why Avery Storm ran most of the music video. He like us has taken the metaphorical and implied meanings of the song and converted them into a physical picture that relates to him as we will do when we create the story of the lead being in a trapped mental state.

Meet Our Artist - Brage Alpha

This is our artist 'Brage Alpha' we feel that he is the right 'look' for our music video and what we are looking for in a person.
We feel that the look he has is good enough to portray an asylum escapist.
He also has a rough look about him which again helps us in the 'crazy' department.

Twitter

It's coming along well!

shot list

Here we have create a written story board for miike snows very own animal, we have done this so that we can create a sense of the lengths our shots need to be and through doing this we have decided we also need flickered shots (fast like a flip book) to create a sense of thrill and create a pase.
This is what miike snow does in animal and this is the song we have chosen.
From this time schedule we can now create a story board of our own with our own characters ect, but stick to the timings, this will then be interpreting his video into ours.

UK Tribes

Using UK Tribes, looked to find information that would help us identify our target audience a little easier with some further clarity of what they are in to and what they are like.
The site shows the tendencies and style of all different types of 'tribes' in the UK, with this information we can direct our video in a way that suits the intended audience's preference.
For example our target audience is essentially the 'indie' type but now it's apparent that this group also links to 'trendies' 'townies' 'hipsters' 'geeks' and 'young alts' this broadens our potential market.

25 Word Pitch - Final

"Weird, out there, non-generic, captivating, Alpha fans. Distorted imagination, distorted personification. Dark macabre meets effervescent." This is the second version of the pitch, which has been re-worded to suit a better purpose.

Inspirations For Video

25 Word Pitch

"Our unusual, out there, non generic video for the single Animal will be captivating for all Alpha fans and further a field." Our Ptich was put together with the idea of summing up the over all feeling of the video whilst addressing the audiemce of interest.

Plans for this week

Myself and Charlie have spoke and began to organise our time for the coming week's progress. Between us we intend to prepare and deliver our pitch to the class along with submitting a near on finalised idea to our teacher to gain feedback. Another thing that we intend on doing is finding resources and looking for extra inspirations to use for the video i.e set design and costume. This will be through internet research, watching existing pieces of work and going to find resources and equipment locally.

Ellie Goulding Video Analyis

The video’s illustrative foundation performance is throughout alongside amplification features to narrate the song’s meaning and purpose. The two parts show the artist, but in a different stance and look. The performer character of Goulding is shown as a ‘pure white’ figure in costume and mise en scene, it is her that we see singing in the video. On the other hand the other character of herself is seen in much more casual clothing with the male, the pair are in an outside location on their own, from their body langaue and movement we can gage that they are in a relationship, therefore the song must be based upon this. The ‘pure white’ character is seen as a mythical narrator whereas the girl in the more casual style of clothing is viewed as more down to earth and real. The way she is dressed allows the audience to find a common ground with her. The most obvious part of the amplification in this video is the visuals of stars in the sky and in her and the man’s eyes, as well as the star formations in the sky. This amplifies the lyrics ‘starry eyed’ this is done through use of post-production editing, this give the audience a true sense of the meaning of her lyrics. The use of the Mini Cooper car at the start of the video has numerous factors that impact the audience. Firstly the style of car being every day and casual shows us something about the artist herself, suggesting that she is not flashy but instead is quite basic in terms of materialism. Another stance is that it carries a very strong British tradition, this goes against many videos that use motor cars as often you would see an American muscle/sports car or a flash European convertible, and this shows us that Ellie Goulding as an artist and person is not overly interested in fitting into popular culture but instead making music that is true to what she likes and feels.

Miles Kane Video Analysis

Throughout the video illustration features are shown, this is through he being visibly seen singing every lyric in performance.  The visuals tie into the lyrics in parts also, mainly through the fact he is alone in the video fits ‘first of my kind’ title as there is no other like him. Also his movement links to the lyrics at times, for example when singing “higher ground” he looks upwards. This could be seen as amplification features, along with star motifs that set Miles Kane apart from other artists. The costume seen in the video is similar to what fans would expect him to be wearing when in public or on a television appearance, this fits the generic indie artists as this is regular in most other similar videos I’ve seen. The locations fit the lyrical development throughout the song, these locations are easily identified, London by the red telephone boxes Thames and Paris by the Eiffel Tower. By showing the audience him walking past the three red phone boxes in the opening of the video straight away shows the audience that Miles Kane as an artist and person is old in style, instead of being hung up on mod cons that are often seen in modern videos. This could suggest he is focused on style over substance. The “true romance” fits Paris, as this is seen as a luxurious location visited by people in love; this allows us to have an extra feel of his love for the subject through contextual features of the visuals.  The camera work is more distant at the start and during instrumental periods but mainly close ups when he sings with constant tracking of his walking.

Analysis of Music Video

Jack PeƱate - 'Have I Been A Fool'

Illustrate: Jack is the artist and he himself is singing about girls and 'have i been a fool', we can see him singing and sometimes he plays a guitar. The song is about being a fool to a girl/a lot of girls and this comes across to me in the video, we see him saying he’s kissed a lot of girls and that he is trying to make it up to all of them. I think that i could portray this style of video into mine; we could have somebody walking along lip syncing and creating a story. There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals amplifying the lyrics. There are also a lot of close ups of the artist (even though he is the only person in his band)this shows how the record company have paid a lot of the money to get his face recognised and get an image out for himself. his clothes are rather 'indie' as he is wearing a patterned hat, skinny jeans, bright yellow coat and boat shoes, this to me means he is trying to portray he musical image in his videos and is not just letting somebody dress him. OK Go - 'This Too Shall Pass'

Audience Profile

Our typical audience likes to be ahead of the game when it comes to discovering new music. They would be around 16-24 and interested in indie culture. They would prefer non-mainstream bands such as junior fencing club but also like the less known solo artists such as Jack Penate and Miike snow. Like most teenagers they would rather go out and see there favourite band perform than buy the CD, Brage Alpha performs at well-known gigs such as Leeds, and Reading.  Brage’s music will be indie rock, electronic and dance this will engage the new audiences and bring him a bigger fan base.

Brage Alpha - Bio

He released his first single, titled ‘animal’, was recorded in London and released October 2012 by Clash Records. The Guardian spoke highly of the band, saying Brage Alpha "coolly emotional music suggests a-ha meets Animal Collective". He has already previewed songs on YouTube, as an amateur were great hits, drumming up thousands of fans. One named 'A Horse Is Not a Home' reached over 500,000 views in the UK alone, which lead to him signing to clash. In a recent interview with London Independent Music Magazine, he revealed his unexpected popularity, "I don’t think my project was that thought out when I started. I just wanted to make cool music.”

Brage Alpha

We decided that it would be best if we only had a one man band, this way because we don’t have any friends who play instruments so our video wouldn’t be filled with armature guitar players and fake drummers, this would really come across in our video and not give us the look we wanted.

We have decided on the name 'Brage Alpha' for our artist.

Brage is a Norwegian name for the 'god of music' so we thought that this would be a great first name.
We also chose Alpha because it has connotations of alpha male, which would make our male artist come across as the alpha male as he’s standing alone.
Alpha also has connotations of alphabet, this links in with the fact that he is a musician and is very lyrical.

So for these reasons our artists name is BRAGE ALPHA.

Song Choice

We have decided on Miike snow-Animal as our song for our music video. We have chosen this because we would like our music video to be quite crazy and weird; we can portray that through the lyrics of the song, 'There was a time when my world was filled with darkness, darkness' We also feel that the video itself could give us inspiration for our own as we like the quirkiness of the outfits and how the main character doesn’t really do anything which makes him seem crazy which the look we would want.
